Hi. I’m Martin Davies. The Recording Studio Guy. :
I’ve been a Producer, Sound Engineer, Mixing and Mastering Engineer since my apprenticeship started in 1984 at Adelaide Recording Studios. I’ve worked in television, radio, live sound and I have always been a musician – performing live, writing songs and collaborating with fellow musicians.
I have more energy and passion for studio production than ever – even after some of the meandering routes I’ve taken on my sound recording path.
I love the possibilities for producing sound in the studio that today are greater than ever before. I love the old technologies and interfacing them with the new. The old gear is special and cannot be reproduced in all its individual nuances and I love the freedom of combining them with non linear digital workstation work flows. AVID ProTools, Apple Logic Pro X, whatever flavour you want they have their advantages and an incredible amount of possibilities.
I like to work in a relaxed, efficient and streamlined way that leads to choosing the best option for the task at hand – whether that’s a tracking session, an overdub, a mix, mastering, or a voice recording for podcast or audiobook. I want to serve the song or the project in the way that suits it best and leads to the easiest way to make decisions and achieve the optimum result.
I’ve appreciated all I’ve learnt from the mentors in my life and it makes me happy to help others on their sound recording journey. If I can give someone else a tip or some advice that makes their life easier and enhances their progress I am open to sharing and discussing what I’ve learned. That could be over a coffee or in the studio during a session so if you think you’d like to take me up on that offer get in touch using the contact form on this website.
I charge $75 an hour or by the project depending on the project and the requirements involved. I am conscious that most people are on a budget and I take that into account when quoting for work. Often I do unpaid work where a project demands it. Sometimes I don’t charge for parts of the project that perhaps I think are worth me doing for my own satisfaction but a client couldn’t or wouldn’t want to pay for it. Or for example I’ll make changes to mixes and masters or export rough mixes free of charge – whatever makes everyone feel they’ve been listened too and given the final result they were hoping for or even more.

“I recorded my latest album “Planet Earth 3rd from the Sun” at Sodypop with Martin Davies doing most of the tracking and combining with owner Brett Sody for the mix. I’ve recorded my last 4 albums there and can thoroughly recommend it as a place to make a record! Martin and Brett are a great team with the atmosphere in the studio and control room relaxed and the expertise and experience of these 2 guys second to none. Many laughs too which come free of charge! Always a pleasure recording at Sody Pop.”
Thanks for reading this far. If you think you’d like to ask me some questions in person and find out if I’m who you’d like to work with then I look forward to hearing from you.
